Neil P. Shah, MD PhD, is the Edward S. Ageno Distinguished Professor in Hematology/Oncology at the UCSF School of Medicine, Director of the UCSF Molecular Medicine Residency Program and Chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Treatment Guidelines Panel. He will discuss his journey as a physician-scientist, and how his efforts to understand molecular mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapeutics for blood cancers has led directly to the identification and US FDA approval of two effective cancer therapies. He will also discuss the critical role that physician-scientists play in the advancement of medical science, and the challenges of the physician-scientist career pathway.

"The Silent Puppet Master: How RNA Controls the Brain"

Dr. Caroline Vissers completed her PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine studying chemical modifications in neural stem cells and cancer biology. She was then recruited as a faculty member at UCSF in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics where she now runs her own lab studying RNA regulation of human-specific neural development and disease. At this speaker series Caroline will remind you of a few things you learned in high school science classes and clarify classic concepts of biology with current cutting-edge discoveries.

Jennifer Garrison, PhD, is a passionate and vocal advocate for healthy aging in women and is pioneering a global movement to advance science focused on understanding the fundamental drivers of female aging as Co-Founder and Executive Director of ProductiveHealth.org (formerly named GCRLE). She is also a faculty member at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, where she co-Directs the Center for Healthy Aging in Women and holds secondary appointments in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at UCSF and the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at USC. Her research lab studies mind-body communication, particularly how age-related changes in the chemical conversation between ovaries and brain may lead to accelerated aging in females. Her goal is to discover how and why ovaries age before other tissues and use that knowledge to extend healthspan in both men and women. During the event, Jennifer will discuss why ovaries are the pacemaker for aging in female bodies – beyond reproduction, they hold the key to healthy longevity.
